CREATIVITY
Creativity is the phenomenon through which something new, original and valuable is created. Making things complex is not creativity but to make them simple by perceiving in a new way and to present innovatively is what the creativity demands. Creative thinking leads to new connections between different parts of the brain and this can only be done by exposing students
to new learning experiences instead of limiting their thinking of few course books. Elbert Einstein once said:
“Everybody is a genius, but if you judge a fish by its ability to climb a tree, it will live its whole life believing that it is stupid.”
Today, most of the students are facing the same situation as our educational system is killing their creativity, individuality, and intellectuality by forcing them. If we are customizing health care, cars, computers, mobile phones, and even Facebook pages then why not the schools, colleges, and universities which have the same standards, teaching methods and curriculum over centuries and centuries.
Every scientist tells that no two brains are same and parents with two or more children confirm that claim. So, these standardized tests and bubbling in a multiple-choice question cannot decide the success of a student and polish his hidden skills. Educational institutes are producing robot’s
zombies instead of students thinking creatively, innovatively, critically and independently in this progressed world. There is an immense need for introducing creativity into this traditional learning system as students are our future.
AWARENESS
Awareness, if consider broadly, means to get conscious about something. Here is an example which was observed or still observing that almost 70% of the scholarships are not availed by students because they don’t even know about them. Numerous cultural exchange programs and internships in foreign countries wasted as the students are not guided properly or get awareness about them.
It’s the need of time to come out of this typical “Ratta system”. In the 21st century, the means of assessing and acquiring information has been changed. Now the things are just at a distance of pressing few buttons or hitting a few clicks but the need is of creating platforms that make it easy for students to remain updated.
It’s our duty to educate youth so they not only aware of their rights but also spread this awareness to those areas where people still think that getting their child educated is just a formality, not a necessity. Although a number of NGOs and Organizations are working hard and doing their best to eradicate child labor from the lives of children living in slums and make education a core part of their childhood. But still, there is an immense need of spreading the awareness as it’s the right of every Pakistani to get educated. Government and NGOs have started various need-based scholarships and schemes to support these needy students. All there is a need to find them and
guide them on a right path!
ACTION
“Action speaks louder than words”
A famous proverb heard by many times but this rule is not followed because it’s easy to say something than performing it and the same happening in the case of our education system. Our educational system is 90% about memorizing things than doing them practically. Most of the educational institutes are still based on the same outdated system where the whole learning system is just based on an hour lecture. This is not the way of unlocking a student’s potential and skills.
Action-based education is based on active and hands-on learning by indulging students in projects and practical assignments. This will give the students a chance of self-recognition and made them independent. It’s a simple rule that we never find out how good or bad one is in anything unless performed it and then not only come to know about the strengths but finds
weaknesses too.
The world has changed and progressed and there is strong need that students are forced to use the theoretical information instead of just repeating them in minds in order to get higher grades or CGPAs. Action-based education help students in becoming active rather than passive and dull learners and compel them to “do” than just ”watch” and ”listen” and forget after some time.
The term ‘entrepreneurship’ never came into existence if people just focus on speaking rather than believing in actions. A good learner can be a class topper but in-field champion is one who polishes his/her skills through hands-on learning.
ACCOUNTABILITY
The very first thing which every parent want to know and are excited about is how their children are performing and the only way to answer their questions is through shared accountability. The world is facing a learning crisis. According to the World Bank, less than 50% of students are proficient in basic skills (reading, writing, counting) in developing countries and 86% in
developed countries. In order to increase this number and the progress of the educational system, there is a need for setting high standard bars and continuous evaluation.
It’s the right of a citizen that all the educational bodies should pass through the accountability process and this process should be interactive and continuous. Actually, accountability is something that is more related to internal satisfaction of a person rather than imposing it externally. If teachers value their internal accountability and believe that they are the most
important part of society who are playing a vital role in building a developed nation as they are directly involved and affecting the lives of youth who are the most precious asset of any country.
Accountability develops the sense of responsibility in students and improves their performance, promotes ownership, and inspires confidence. It teaches students to admit their mistakes when they are wrong instead of blaming, making excuses or getting defensive.
LOGICAL THINKING
Logical thinking is the process in which an individual has Step Wise Thinking and judge everything on basis of reasoning before ending up to any conclusion. It helps one from believing in any hypothesis too quickly unless one has a strong reason or logic to admit it and finding alternative paths for the solution of any problem.
Unfortunately, the importance of logical thinking in our education is almost zero and we want students to just limit to what is written in books and teach by teachers. There is no platform available for them where they can think beyond these books and come up with new facts, ideas and thoughts. This ”Ratta System” is not only damaging their reasoning ability but also diminish
their decision making power and problem-solving ability.
In this world of technology where people have to deal with continuous change, logical thinking helps to come up with creative solutions and new ideas which strengthen our position in a fast changing environment.
There are many reasons for the lack of logical thinking in students and the biggest fear is to get the higher score in assessment. The pattern of teaching and taking tests is so-called ‘outdated’, instead of using brains critically, innovatively and creatively the students try to copy paste the answers. This is the substantial reason why students terribly failed while doing fieldwork in
professional life because they not only lack in functioning but also don’t have the understanding of concepts. So there is an immense need to force the students not only to find answers but also discover new questions from those answers!!!
ATTRACTION
Attraction is simply the power to attract someone and evoking his interest or liking towards someone or something. It is obvious that more attraction towards something easier it is to do it. The simplest way to make anything attractive is to highlight its advantages, needs or plus points and same as in the case of Education. The law of attraction works for some people and
sometimes not for some people but in the case of students, this always works. To teach someone is actually a difficult and tricky job, it usually needs time, patience and mind. If you directly ask someone to study that person always make excuses and become lame. We can force one to memorize but not to learn. Just there is a need to deal with them carefully and try to present the
study in a manner that they get attracted by linking it with their dreams and interest.
The studies showed that students perform well in the class of those teachers who taught differently and are enthusiastic about their subject. But the real task is to maintain their interest in the class and it can only be possible if this gift of education is presented in a beautiful wrapping of attraction. In this aspect, the educational institute’s internal environment also matters a lot. The learning environment needs to be up-to-date for the modern student so, that one can compete with this competitive world and challenging environment.
KNOWLEDGE
Knowledge is information, understanding, or awareness of something theoretically or through practical experience. It increases by perceiving, learning and discovering. Educational institutes just create an environment and provide the platform in which a student can imply and fully utilizes their skills and knowledge. If parents thought that by sending their children to schools, colleges, and universities, their brains become storehouses of knowledge, they are at big mistake. Teachers cannot force the knowledge to be stuck in student’s mind they can just create an environment in which one can acquire and memorize the information. Now the students are not only dependent on schools and teachers for the information, but they also have google, youtube, and many other search engine resources. Although they cannot replace books and knowledge of Professors but they have access to easier and cheaper way of getting knowledge.
Learning in our educational system is associated with memorizing things but knowledge is something that a person has gained through experiences, reading and from surroundings. Instead of encouraging students to ask a question and find the logic we taught to just answer what is asked. This is a way of enhancing memory, not the knowledge.
The students mostly thought educational institute is just a route of getting the degree with higher grades or better CGPAs instead of enhancing their knowledge and skills. The educational institutes also play a vital role in the learning process rather than limited to course books. These institutes should provide their students with an open platform to learn and have knowledge by
giving tasks and assignments. So that they can analyze the information, create ideas and use this information more skillfully.
ACCOMPLISHMENT
Accomplishment in education is the degree which a student achieved in long-term and short-term goals by setting their targets. In countries which have developed societies, their academic achievements play a vital role in the success of any person as they more likely to have employment opportunities, substantial jobs, and a more secure career. These students also have higher self-esteem, more confident and lesser chances to get depressed, are extrovert, have better ability to interact with people and less likely to engage in activities like criminal or abusive. Self-esteem and self-confidence are critical factors in commitment to academic success.
Non-academic and extracurricular accomplishments also help students to manage stress and enhance leadership, team working and decision-making skills, but these accomplishments also require support and confidence of parents. Academic accomplishments need full utilization of skills, time, resources and dedication. It defines either one can take part in higher education or can pursue his dreams. So in order to have a successful career ahead, one needs to have a well accomplished academic at present!!
ADAPTABILITY
Adaptability is the capacity of a person to manage and cope up with the novel, uncertain and changing circumstances and events that arise. Throughout a person’s lifetime, this world changes again and again. They are likely to see the educational reforms, scientific achievements and day by day technology changing. Even one’s own life has to pass through different phases, starting with school, heading to college and universities, moving out of home for jobs and begin their relationships. So, to move with this ever-shifting world, there is a need to be adaptable.
There is also a need to encourage students to deal with novel situations by taking a new and effective course of action. This can be done by any kind of working environment and teammates. There is a need that students should learn to minimize discontent and maximize learning when circumstances change. So that students do not hesitate in grabbing new opportunities. It will help them to come out of their comfort, assign them projects with the fellows they have not worked before so they can develop the capacity to be adaptable and easily adjustable to a new working environment.
Change, novelty, innovation, transition, and uncertainty are realities of life. The extent to which a student is adaptable more he will be productive in this innovative world.
AUTHORITY
One who has the authority guides according to the actions of others. In this manner, the person having authority is superior while the others are subordinate. Authority is often confused with power. Power is referred to as the capacity of a person to control the actions of others and influence on their will. When it comes under the matter of education, it is better to use authority in class rather than power. Frank Furedi, Professor in University of Kent UK said:
“Teaching and learning need authority; knowledge development depends on authority. And, as a consequence, education rests on authority. Therefore the demise of authority results in the demise of education”
Authority is basically well-defined in two forms. The first one is Formal Authority, which is given to a person by some social organization or wins it through a proper system of laws. The other one is Personal Authority which is spontaneously given to a person due to his exceptional performance in knowledge, competence, and morality. An effective teaching always depends on personal authority as it can always be challenged. A committed and sincere teacher never wants his students to follow his orders mechanically. One must remain open to the challenges and criticisms bring on by the students and evolve as much needed.
It is a fact that there is a need of individuals and nations to depend on authority in order to live with discipline and manage things smoothly. There is a need to teach youth not to accept the authority legitimately and give blind submission instead a critical and responsible attitude should be followed.
